Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. Her mother was her grandmother and grew up being an all-single child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Scott was a student in secondary school as well as working two job. She was hoping to be a English teacher in high school. The dream, however was in vain when she left school after three years of studies and was a teacher's assistant. She began her career as a spoken word artist who performed her own works during live poetry readings. She later joined forces together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. She came out during the Roots concert. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. Additionally, she was able to learn about the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first signing artist on Hidden Beach Recordings.
